Overview

Operational planning for complex energy projects is often spread across multiple

spreadsheets, document folders, emails, and trackers.

There can be value in each of these tools, but when used collectively they can

create disconnected project information and siloed visibility across teams.

To solve this problem, Podium Energy Consultancy developed the Operational Planning Tool, or OPT - a web-based platform that helps energy project teams bring planning, asset information, documentation, stock, progress reporting and dashboards into one connected digital environment.

The OPT demonstration highlighted how a more connected approach could help teams gain better visibility of their project activity. This supports stronger team accountability and more proactive decision-making.

The Challenge

Project teams can spread their operational information too thinly and across too many places.

It’s common to see project delivery impacted by issues such as:

  • Different versions of the 'truth'

  • Teams failing to see what works are upcoming

  • Reporting taking too long

  • Disconnected document control systems

  • Unclear asset or stock information

  • Manual duplication of data

  • Issue tracking becoming more difficult

  • Reduced accountability across teams.

Offshore wind and other complex energy projects are not immune to these challenges which can impact project planning, mobilisation, execution, and even close-out.

The OPT demonstration was an opportunity to showcase how operational information can be connected in a practical way that creates true project control.

Podium’s Approach

OPT was designed with busy project teams in mind. The tool is shaped around

connecting key information needs in one place and supporting teams to better

manage and view:

  • Operational plans

  • Asset information

  • Resource requirements

  • Stock and materials

  • Documents

  • Progress updates

  • Task status

  • Dashboards

  • Higher-level project reporting and visibility.

Digitising information is only useful if it makes a project team’s job easier. Podium designed OPT to show how better structure and connected information improves planning, reporting, and decision-making.

The Outcome

The demonstration showed how OPT can support project teams to move away from fragmented, traditional approaches to operational planning. Instead, teams can leverage one source of truth for project control.

By connecting information into one workspace, teams can see better visibility of activity, avoid duplicating tasks, and make project data easier to access and act upon.

OPT supports clearer communication between field teams, project managers, and senior stakeholders. This helps to make operational information more useful at every level of project delivery.

Operational visibility should never be a nice-to-have for complex energy projects. It’s a critical project delivery requirement.

Disconnected information causes project teams to lose time and control. When information is visible, structured and connected across a project, teams can make better, faster decisions.

Podium’s Operational Planning Tool (OPT) is designed to help teams achieve true project control from their operational data, supporting them to create one source of truth for operational planning across reporting, documentation, asset information, and project visibility.
